heres my latest attempt, with a newly built Vtail, 54 seconds, the best in New Zealand is 49 seconds and worldwide 46 seconds (from Australia)

5 laps around a cricket pitch (20.1 meters / 66 ft) flowen in a figure 8
What are you waiting for, give it a go and post up your video 🙂
September 24th , 2011, fly-in at “petes park” in Hamilton – a great day of nothing but multirotors
The next progression from the Vtail quad, naturally is a Vtail Hex !
the following video is not very good, and the tuning wasn’t finished.
The Controler is an open pilot board, the front two motors were controlled from one channel, only used for pitch, the center motors controlled roll, and the rears yaw and pitch, so in total 5 channels for 6 motors.
only issue was in a side wind, the front motors needed to be able to be used for roll as well, it tended not to have enough authority…..i didnt continue with this one….built something better
My favorite Vtail, as a general purpose machine
heres some footage with a crash (as alot of my flights end in a crash)
Its a great machine, with alot of load carryin capacity in a compact size, it also manages to fly if you loose 1 front prop
Vtail’s hold a special place with me, more yaw authority than a normal multirotor, and the graceful turns like a tricopter without that pesky yaw mechanism.
The first one was a quad, it was an experiment after converting a standard frame to a Y4, the Y4 performed well indoors, but lacked YAW authority when handling a breeze outside
so, not to be beaten, i remember reading a post on RCgroups about a vtail built by revritchie, so decided to give it a go. a piece of 20mm by 2mm aluminum bar, bent into a 120 deg Vee shape, and the Vtail was born 🙂
and some fun flying at the Hawera MAC field
Openpilot CC3D Hardware – buy from the global store http://store.openpilot.org/ monitor the forums for avalability
the Kiwirc.com and Southerncross-uav.com sites have gone, i dont use them , so everything is directed to this blog. I will slowly populate it with all my multirotor and RC stuff.
if you want a CC3D from Openpilot, visit the CC3D page
The Inaugral Multirotor “hover-in” in New Zealand.
20th March 2011 – Tokoroa Air Field, hosted by the SWMAC (South Waikato Model Aero Club) http://www.aardvark.co.nz/swmac/ and Bruce Simpson of RC Model Reviews Fame http://www.rcmodelreviews.com/ knowen as Xjet and RCMR on YouTube.
A total of 6 pilots descended on the field on Sunday, Wayne and Stu both from Tauranga, Keith from Auckland, Pete from Hamilton, Ivan from Cambridge, Me (Mathew) from Hawera, and not flying (yet – its in the-build) Neil from Tauranga as well. Tauranga seems to be the multirotor epi-center in New Zealand ! (as waynes wife also has a quad)
Great Day, not to much damage done (apart from Keith bending his nice Jakub frame, dihedral always helps 🙂 and Ivan’s reciever coming loose and thumping the controller) and lots of Tuning, as two quads were tuned, plus we did a Minsoo Kim blue board install on Two Tricopters at the field and had them both flying in 5 minutes !
Wayne showed us some “sport flying” and Pete did a whole lot of Go=Pro video shooting ( I think he flew a total of 8 batteries for the day)
Out of the 7 quads/tri’s , at the end of the day, 1 had a FY90Q controller, and the other 6 had the Minsoo Kim Blue Board (KKuk derivative) all running xx_multicopter v1.5 software.
Photos from the Day – thanks Pete
We have another fly-in next weekend (26th/27th March 2011) at the Hawera-MAC http://haweramac.wordpress.com/ and we should get 5 pilots to that event (Wayne and Julie from Tauranga, Brendon and Mathew from Hawera and Brett from New Plymouth)
